IBC organized signing ceremony for Professor Talib al-Baghdady’s book titled “Maqamat al-Baghdady”

Among the Iraqi Business Council’s (IBC’s) cultural programme activities, and in the presence of Iraq’s ambassador to Jordan, Dr Jawad Hadi Abbas, a signing ceremony for Dr Talib al-Baghdady’s book titled Maqamat al-Baghdady (a ‘maqama’, which is the singular form of ‘maqamat,’ isa ‘novel in rhymed prose’), was held in the IBC’s meeting room, first floor, Sweifiyyeh.

 

 

At the beginning of the function, IBC’s member, Mr. Mohammad al-Baghdady, gave an overview about the autobiography of Professor Talib al-Baghdady, who then took the floor to talk about his authored works, the latest of which is the one that has been recently published under the title “Maqamat al-Baghdady” – one in series called Akhadeed fi ath-Thakira “Grooves of Memory”.

During the event, the author touched on the topics discussed in this work, including his memories as an Iraqi national who has lived through all the eras that the country has experienced, and that have inscribed his memory over the years of the awarenesswhich he has lived – while approaching the age of eighty.

The author signed a significant number of copies of his book for the audience. The event also included melodies of the Oud (a musical instrument similar to the European lute or an ancestor of the guitar) played by Ziyad al-Awsi.

The ceremony was attended by Dr Abdel-Razzaq al-Issa, the incumbent cultural attaché, Mr. Abbas al-Husseiny and a constellation of the attending artists, writers, educators and the Iraqi community members in Jordan, alongside with a huge crowd of media professionals and satellite station channels.

On the part of the IBC, the ceremony was attended by the President, Dr. Majid alSadi; the Vice President and Secretary, Mr. Saad Naji; member of the board of directors, Ms. Wasan al-Khafajy; and a number of the members of the board: Mr. Sa’id Kaskous, Mr. Mohammad al-Mufti and Mrs. Widad as-Saffaar, as well as the IBC’s director-general and staff.

IBC Members Met on Tuesday February 17th 2015 with the Assistant Swedish Ambassador to Jordan Mrs. Josephine Helegrene and the Official Trade Envoy to Sweden Mr. Ali Shakir At IBC Headquarters

Within the framework of IBC international and economic relations programs and its goals in promoting economic cooperation between the companies owned by IBC members and the international business community, IBC members met on Tuesday February 17th 2015 at IBC Headquarters with the Deputy Swedish Ambassador to Jordan Mrs. Josephine Helegrene, her Assistant, the Trade Envoy in Sweden Mr. Ali Shakir and the Head of Swedish / Iraqi Trade and Investment Council.

During the meeting certain topics were discussed such as the Iraqi – Swedish economic relations, investment environment, the trade opportunities available in both countries and the facilities granted by the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad and Amman to Iraqi investors.

Also, agreement was reached to provide IBC with the investment programs, establishment of companies in Sweden and obtainment of the relevant residence permits by investors.

During the meeting, Mr. Ali Shakir talked about his duties as a trade commissioner and the keenness of the Swedish Government on promoting relations between the two countries.

The visiting delegation and IBC members agreed on organizing economic activities between the two sides during the coming period including holding an Iraqi – Swedish economic conference, arranging for Iraqi trade delegation to visit Sweden to meet with Swedish companies that are interested in accessing the Iraqi market and identifying available investment opportunities.

IBC members provided brief introductions on their companies and their lines of business.

Also, IBC programs and achievements were presented, IBC activities that are held periodically, the agreements concluded with Embassies, Consulates, Chambers of Commerce, United Nations Agencies and Civil Community organizations.

On IBC side the meeting was attended by its Vice Chairman and Secretary-General Mr. Saad Naji, Vice Chairman and Board member Mr. Turkey Al-Qaissi, Board members; Mr. Mekki Al-Faiz, Mr. Usama Al-Quraishi and Mr. Fakhri Reshan, representative of the Board member Mr. Khalil Al-Bunniya, IBC members; Mr. Raed Al-Bayati, Mr. Ahmed Al-Amili, Mr. Aqeel Al-Hadi, Mr. Muhammad Al Baghdadi and IBC CEO.

IBC Members Participate in the Launching of Private Sector Development Strategy Conference 2014 – 2030 On Thursday February 12th 2015 in Baghdad.

A delegation of IBC members participated in the Launching of Private Sector Development Strategy Conference in Iraq 2014 – 2030 organized by the Advisory Commission in collaboration with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at Rashid Hotel – Baghdad on Thursday February 12th 2015 under the auspices of the Iraqi Prime Minister Dr. Haider Al-Abbadi under the title “Shifting to the Private Sector is a Basic Foundation to Support Iraqi Economy”. 

The Conference was attended by the two Iraqi Vice Prime Minister, a number of Ministers, Council of Ministers Secretary-General, a number of officials and Ambassadors of foreign countries to Iraq as well as representatives of the Private and Civil Communities.

In his speech, the Iraqi Prime Minister Dr. Al-Abbadi said that Iraq needs economic diversity through gradual shifting from an economy relying solely on oil and oil revenues to adoption of multiple resources methods in order to achieve the required growth in this field.

Dr. Al-Abbadi further said that the economic shifting will contribute to the activation of economic movement in the country as well as providing employment opportunities to the unemployed.  The Prime Minister further added that the Government would not dispense with the Private Sector Companies and will work on developing and re-structuring the Government-owned companies.

Dr. Al-Abbadi stressed the significance of developing the Agricultural, Banking and Industrial Sectors which will be under the Government chain-reforms plan, demanding from the international organizations, commissions and international advisors to provide relevant support in order to promote and develop the Iraqi Private Sector.

The UNDP Representative in Iraq Mrs. Liza Grand said during the Conference that the Advisory Commission and the UNDP have embarked on restoring the executive restructuring and arrangements to launch and implement the Private Sector Development Strategy in Iraq after being approved by the General Secretariate of the Council of Ministers in line with the Government Program.

Mrs. Grand further elaborated that activation of this Sector will provide the Iraqi youth with 250,000 employment opportunity at a time when the Government is no longer able to provide such employment opportunities in the Public Sector.

It is worth mentioning that IBC participated in the Conference as member of a Work Committee for laying out a strategy for the development of the Iraqi Private Sector 2014 – 2030 through a series of meetings held by the Iraqi Government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program.

IBC also presented a number of worksheets with respect to this strategy as well as proposals to promote the investment environment and enhance the role of the Iraqi Private Sector.

IBC Chairman and Members Participate in the First International Conference Held in Baghdad

Upon the invitation extended by the Mr. Jawad Al-Bolani Head of the Economy and Investment Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, IBC Chairman Dr. Majid Sadi and a number of IBC Board members; IBC Vice Chairman Mr. Turky Al-Qaissi, Mr. Mekki Al-Faiz, Mr. Usama Al-Quraishi, Mr. Fakhri Reshan, Mr. Khalil Al-Bunniya, Mr.  Muhammad Jawad Al-Jubouri and IBC members; Mr. Moustafa Al-Amin and Mr. Louay Al-Shakarchi participated in the First International Conference held under the title “Staid Investment Law that Achieves Development Goals and Meets Investors’  Aspiration” which was held on 4th and 5th February 2015 at Babyl Hotel – Baghdad / Iraq.

The Conference that was organized by the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee, started its activities with the presence of Dr. Jawad Al-Bolani President of the Committee and the member ladies and gents under auspices of Dr. Salim Al-Jubouri Head of the Iraqi Parliament. The Conference was in contribution to the improvement of Investment environment in Iraq.

The Conference lasted for two days and recommended adoption of a number of proposals, recommendations and worksheets presented by the attendees recommending commissioning the Executive and Legislative Authorities the follow up of the proposed recommendations and proposals and formation of a Supreme Committee from the Conference comprising of representatives of the Parliamentary Committees, the National Investment Commission, Executives Authorities and the Public Sector to work as crisis centre to apply such recommendations and proposals as well as resolving all obstacles relating to the application of Investment Law and holding a semi-annual conference to follow up investment and economic conditions requirements.

A presentation prepared by the Investment Commission in the Governorates was presented during the final session concerning the investment projects executed, along with a presentation covering the major available investment opportunities.

The final session was attended by the Minister of Oil Mr. Adel Abdul Mehdi, Head of the Advisory Commission in the Prime Ministry Mr. Thamir Al-Ghadban, and a number of Officials and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps.

In his speech delivered during the Conference, the Iraqi Oil Minister Mr. Adel Abdul Mehdi stressed the importance of providing investment opportunities, development of the Iraqi Oil Sector and the necessity of legislating certain laws to facilitate the process of investment in the Refineries and Gas Sectors.

The Conference also included presentation of the worksheets by the Sub-Committees that were formed during the Conference Sessions including Legal, Privatization, Industry, Health, Agriculture, Housing and Banking Committees, in addition to presentation of a worksheet concerning the economic reforms, and presentation of another worksheet representing Government Authorities.

Furthermore, the Conference tackled a number of obstacles that hinder the investment process in Iraq such as administrative routine, issues relating to allocation of lands for investment projects, administrative and financial corruption as well as the effects of the prevailing security situation.

The opening session had also witnessed participation of the Iraqi Vice Prime Minister Mr. Rose Noori Shawees, Vice Prime Minister Mr. Bahaa Al-Aaraji, the Iraqi Trade and Planning Ministers Messrs. Malas Muhammad Abdul Karim and Salman Al-Jumaili, in addition to Arab and foreign Investors, Acting for Ministers, Heads of the National Investment Commission as well as Heads of the Investment Commission in the Governorates.
