The Iraqi Business Council held on Thursday September 17th 2026 a significant economic meeting at its offices with representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) – Iraq mission.
The meeting took place as part of its ongoing communication and cooperation with the international financial and development institutions. The meeting addressed a number of various issues relating to Iraq’s infrastructure sector.
Representing IBC were IBC Vice Chairman & Secretary-General, Dr. Saad Naji, along with IBC members Mr. Hatem Al-Qawasmi, Engineer Tariq Al-Zreiqat, Dr. Faris Al-Safi, Mr. Hamza Al-Safi and Mr. Muhammad Shanshal, as well as IBC Director General.
Representing the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) were Head of Office and Head of Iraq Mission, Ms. Caterina Hansen, and Advisers; Mr. Rami and Ms. May Bertelsen.
At the start of the meeting, Dr. Saad Naji welcomed the EBRD delegation, emphasizing IBC’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination with the Bank. He highlighted the importance of this partnership in supporting development initiatives and programs, as well as enhancing the private sector’s role in the development of Iraq’s economic development.
The meeting was held as the Bank prepares an assessment of Iraq’s infrastructure sector. Discussions focused on a number of key areas, foremost among them the human capital development, promoting equal opportunities, and developing the competencies and skills required to support Iraq’s infrastructure sector.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views and perspectives on the needs of the private sector and the challenges associated with developing the human capital. Discussions further addressed the state of the labor market, the skills required and the importance of strengthening the private sector’s participation in supporting development efforts and improving the working environment across infrastructure-related sectors.
IBC members also shared their practical insights and experience regarding a number of challenges and opportunities facing the private sector in Iraq. They put forward a range of observations and recommendations that could contribute to enriching the assessment being conducted by the Bank. In this regard, it was agreed that the Bank would circulate a questionnaire to Council members to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of the Iraqi market and private sector, and to incorporate with their views and feedback into the Bank’s assessment of Iraq’s infrastructure sector.
